Iowa High School Sports Wrap-Up: Football Champions Crowned, Girls Wrestling and Basketball Begins

The Iowa high school football season came to a close in grand fashion last week with state championships in all seven classes.

Southeast Polk won its third consecutive Class 5A title with a 49-21 victory over Ankeny at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Friday, Nov. 17. Van Meter made it three in a row by defeating Lyon Central/George-Little Rock 24-21 in the Class 2A title game, while Williamsburg defeated Bishop Hyland, 20-0, for the Class 3A title.

On Friday, Nov. 16, Bishop Garrigan defeated Bedford 39-30 in the 8-man tournament to claim the title. West Hancock narrowly defeated Woodbury Central, 30-28, for the Class A title in the 8-man championship game on Friday, Nov. 16, Grundy Center defeated MFL MarMac, 42-0, in the Class 1A championship game, and Lewis Central beat West, 40-21, for its for the third time in three years, and Bishop Garrigan won the title with a 39-30 win over Bedford. 21 over Westside for the second time in three years. Exciting high school sports weren't limited to soccer, as girls wrestling and basketball also kicked off last week.

The Central Iowa Girls Wrestling Tournament kicked off on Saturday, Nov. 18 in Nevada, marking the final week of girls wrestling. The tournament featured 34 teams and 409 wrestlers.

Several competitors excelled in soccer, women's wrestling and basketball.
