He will be playing a new style of basketball this season. The veteran point guard joined the Golden State Warriors this summer. Paul will need to adapt to Steve Kerr's motion offense system. Throughout his career, Paul has been considered a shot-blocking point guard.
However, Paul doesn't think that label is fair. During a recent appearance on the Sirius XM NBA radio show, the veteran point guard noted that his ball-handling style is a product of his environment.
"I've been playing basketball for a long time. Everybody has their own way of handling the ball," Paul said.
"I've been fortunate to be in a league where I've been able to control the ball for a long time. Just because I play that way doesn't mean I don't know how to play without the ball. Luckily, I played college basketball where you put a balloon on the basket.
Paul continued.
"The coaching staff designs plays that don't allow players to pass the ball, they can only set up coverages and counter-coverages. I haven't forgotten how to do that. I still know how to play the ball, whether it's a flex play or any other play.
"Just move the ball. Obviously, there are more cuts now compared to my previous team. Because I can't cut, I have to get the ball. So when you have players like that, there are more options.
Paul may take turns with Stephen Curry to start the Warriors' offense.
At times, Paul will also be asked to lead the Warriors' second unit. For years, the Golden State Warriors have been in desperate need of an experienced point guard off the bench.
Chris Paul will likely be a great addition to their rotation this season.
Steve Kerr excited about Chris Paul joining Warriors rotation
After the Golden State Warriors preseason win over the Sacramento Kings, Steve Kerr shared his excitement about the addition of Chris Paul.
Kerr noted that Paul's veteran leadership will ensure that the Golden State Warriors stay organized when it matters.
"It's fun to see Chris keep us organized. I think he's made Steph's running without the ball better because Chris is getting the ball to him wherever he goes," Kerr said. So they were in some matchups where Steph was getting killed by the top defense and had to drop back. Chris passes him the ball at a perfect pace. Chris has been doing this for years. This is who he is.
The Golden State Warriors core rotation of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green know how to win championships. Chris Paul knows how to set up the offense in the half-court and control the game, especially when it matters.
If Kerr can find a way to bring out the best in all of his players, the Golden State Warriors are on track to return to the NBA Finals this season.
